Re: New shrimp???
I've seen some nice blue ones before online. Not sure what they were called. Much bluer than the blue berry kind.
Bamboo shrimp or vampire shrimp can be a challenge since they are filter feeders. Not many people have successfully bred the Amano shrimp. They breed in saltwater and then transition into freshwater.
How about crayfish instead?

Re: New shrimp???
I would get more CRS and see if you can get them breeding.
I would try the Orange ones probably, since they shouldn't be much harder than RCS.

Re: New shrimp???
@at Amp I have never seen a vampire shrimp or have seen one for sale. As for bamboo shrimp and amano shrimp I don't plan on breeding them, just keep them mostly for looks. I personally enjoy watching bamboo shrimp filter feed and I find them very neat . The blue shrimp you are talking about could be blue bolt not sure. I do find the blue variety very interesting color wise. I will look up on that variety. I don't no why but I'm not into cray fish maybe because I haven't really seen a cool crayfish tank . I do plan on having a shrimp community tank in the future though so, maybe then??? . I'm very excited for it but for now species tank shall suffice.
@at Verbal I can keep Crystal shrimps but I need to get RO water before I even consider breeding them. From all the research I have done they all say the same thing. Your KH, Gh and tds needs to be to their liking. I can keep CRS but breeding is another experience. Orange sakura is prety much another color mutation of cherry if I'm not wrong and so is orange/red rili.

Crayfish can be cool. The bad news is they are now illegal to keep in Virginia.
One thing that is crayfish like, but still legal and plant friendly are the red clawed shrimp. They are a small freshwater prawn.

Re: New shrimp???
Verbal.. dead on regarding Crayfish... Va. Law: It is illegal to sell any species of crayfish live as bait or for personal use, except for personal consumption. (4 VAC 15-360-70)
That law sounds like you can keep (consumption) and collect but not sell them! How would that apply to cross-state internet sales for importation for personal use?
I'm sure someone's encountered this within PVAS.. I do know Ira (yea, again) used to collect and market local crayfish back in the day.. Bill

It is very recent 2 years ago maybe. I bred blue lobster crayfish. They were pretty cool.
I wanted to try the orange dwarf crays - CPOs, but never got around to it until they were illegal. The other crayfish I kept was the marmokrebs - the self-cloning ones. They are cool, but I actually see the justification for them being illegal, since I see the obvious danger of a cloning animal being introduced. They also seem to be fairly cold tolerant.

Re: New shrimp???
Its legal to own up to 50 crayfish. Just can't sell them. I know several people that have had no trouble buying them online. Just use common sence and don't release them into the wild or flush them. Kill them or give they to someone who wants them. They are canabalistic except for the self cloning one. I use to have them in a 10 gallon planted tank and they multiplied like crazy as they ate up all the plants. Crayfish are not plant friendly.
How about saltwater shrimp?

Re: New shrimp???
Jess.. I would think that that can be negated by stating you're growing them out for eventual consumption. Bill

Re: New shrimp???
Very interesting but I think I will shy away crayfish for a while. Since, I'm in love with planted tanks. Saltwater invertebrates are all cool but not until I have a saltwater setup. Amp is this the shrimp you were talking about.

Not quite that white in color. More of a royal blue.
Have you seen any cardinal shrimp? They have some nice red color and very striking white legs and antennas.

I don't know that they are super hard to keep, they apparently need high temp and pH. Finding a decent price may be tough. It looks like even on Aquabid they are $10 to $20 each.

Re: New shrimp???
In that picture alone would be $600-$1200 worth in shrimp. There has to be a better price some where. I might just wait a year for when the market gets flooded with them.

Re: New shrimp???
The $10+ price was the cardinals. Even mail order retail, shouldn't be more than $3-4/each for the orange shrimp.
If you are going the Aquabid route I would stick with US sellers.

Re: New shrimp???
That's what I thought too verbal no more then 3/4 bucks at most. If we get at least 100 dollars worth of shrimp we can definitely get a good deal.
