May Meeting....

Ok.. there doesn't seem to be much interest in a March meeting.. and I'm outta pocket thru April.. BUT... I'd like to host a May Aquatic Yard-sale meeting at the house here... I'm thinking that all could bring about their offerings for up to a week in advance....stage their offerings if they'd like... AND... promote it as a yard-sale/Aquatics via the local media outlets:  C/L,,, facebook, flyers.. etc... The day of the sale/meet would be a bbq for members... a chance to hang and shoot the breeze with other Addictz!... Any thoughts?  Bill

sounds good to me. dont really have anything to offer anymore but some empty tanks. i threw a lot of filters and stuff away.

I only have a week to bring all this junk over.

Well... it's a bit of a haul from Richmond, but if folks don't mind the drive to the boonies...welcome to do a bbq here at our place. Plenty room for everyone. Could have a get together and do same as far as yard sale goes if people don't mind bringing things this far, there's plenty yard for everyone to set up their things & be comfortable in the shade around back & enjoy the country air! Whatcha think?

Sarah... what would be your guess for those that are not part of the club dropping in?  I was thinking the "Aquatic Yardsale" would also be a recruitment tool for the forum.  However, I'm up for a day in the country!  Bill

It's tough to gauge, but I think it would certainly give us a broader reach, so to speak. I think there's a good many people out this way that would be interested if we advertise it...I'm sure I could have it announced on local radio stations & post it online in some other forums. Maybe post some fliers, etc.. Ask all members to do the same. I know MANY people out this way have ponds, of ALL sizes, as well as aquariums & there are a broad range of areas we could extend to coming from this neighborhood. I mean, I know the club is Richmond based, but it wouldn't hurt to network & maybe to make it a bit more appealing, we could do the yard sale part from my house and invite the members to congregate afterward at Bear Creek State Park, about 10 minutes from here. It's inexpensive and quite beautiful. There's a nice beach area & big lake for everyone to swim, rent boats or go fishin off the banks afterward..trails are great. Bbq & picnic table areas all around. People could bring what they wish to cook, hamburger, chicken, whatever, & toss in my fridge or we can relax & cookout in our backyard. We also have a pond just a short walk from the house. It is likely to be an algae covered mess, but there's some big fish in it!! Of course, we catch & release, but not to judge if somebody wants to haul a big ole bass on home with em or a cute little perch for their pond even! We're not too far for powhatan folks to come to..goochland, dilwyn, farmville, amelia, and even lynchburg. We are only 5 miles from rt 60. From my house there's not much difference in distance to Richmond, or Lynchburg. I suppose it really depends upon the number of members interested, but I think it could be a success. What I wouldn't want to happen though is to spread the word around about our big aquatic yard sale and 2 people show up..lol
I do feel that as members, we ALL need to do our part and not just mutually agree that we want meetings & then leave it to Bill to handle the workload and or expense. I think the meetings are vital & we should ALL participate in making them happen, in whatever ways we can. I've found Everyone we know on this site, AMAZING when called upon. Whether it's here, or wherever, I can't think of a better group of people to pull off a great yard sale & spend a nice day hanging out with!

Sarah.. ya make the setting sound like such an idylic setting for a gathering!  Besides the activites/options you've stated, there could also be an opportunity for collecting native fish!  It's turning into a weekend fest!...

Lol, you know what they say, Bill..what's idyllic to one person is anything but, to the next. But yes, it's home and to me, it's great!! What I do know is there's a big ole yard, front & back & plenty of space all around for people to park, set up tables, displays, whatever.. a big front porch & faithful ole shade trees for rest. It's an old house with one bathroom, so no....not idyllic..    But I think it's a workable situation!! And no joke about the bass, they are pretty darned big in the pond out back. I have a couple of little yard ponds I plan to put in, not likely they'll be done by then, but the perch are so pretty & small enough to make some lovely additions to a yard pond..so who knows? But I know there's the best PETCO around, right off 288 on rt 60 headed our way..   The state park is really nice out here & close by and sure....anybody wanting to do so, can either pop a tent, a camper, a lounge chair, recliner, or who knows, might even have a darned bed set up in my spare room by then! lol Anyway, I'm more than happy to have the meeting here. I can't make any promises, but as long as we have fair weather, & we circulate the info, we should have some good response! In large part due to the fact that nobody has done anything like this around here... especially if we throw in some pond related items, plants, stone, fish...whatever...I really want to make a little container fountain with fish on the front porch, any members with that sort of material or interest, would go over well too.
Anyway, it's tossed out there for debate. It doesn't matter to me where we have a meeting, but I do hope we have one!!

Well.. the germ of the idea is out there...Now it's in the court of the rest of the membership.  I can haul myself and Ira I'm sure... I'll do whatever I'm asked to help with the promotion of the event.... It'd be amazing to see it exceed all expectations!  <grin>... Who know's, it could become an annual Spring Fling Event!

It sounds great! I love the actual meetings. Love getting to know everyone and being around like minded people. I am most definitely be IN as long as my schedule allows. Kids and non-fish spouses allowed?

Are you kidding me Cisco? lol Wouldn't have it any other way my friend! Of course, the more, the merrier!! Got a tire swing in one tree & a board/rope swing in another...beyond that, the kids have plenty of behind the house room to roam, and I have a 13 yr old son, so there's boy stuff around..but would need to keep an eye on little, little ones as it is close to the main road. Only thing I have to respectfully ask is that folks don't bring their dog-kids....I'm sorry. I LOVE dogs, but I have a German Shepherd who is very territorial & protective. I'll prob keep her tied or use my baby gate & keep her inside. I don't think she'd hurt anyone once introduced, she's a sweetie, but she's way too rough with little kids and has a very high prey drive, another big dog on her turf & one of them might get hurt, a little one, probably wouldn't fare so well. She's a top notch hunter. I have a hard enough time keeping her off the cats and she lives with them and has for her whole life. My son has a rooster & a duck. We used to have more. Adel Heid took care of some, the local critters look care of the others. Fair warning to you city folk though,    bring your Good bug spray!! Btw, we have tiki torches, yep, the big guns....so no worries.  Low on lawn chairs though so you might wanta throw yours in the trunk. I'll see if I can snap some pics this eve & post for you all so you can get a better idea what you're debating.    Not shy, so if you have questions, please ask.. Mi casa es su casa, y'all.  

Cisco, I am not trying to pick on you, buddy, but I just HAD to "bite"......all children, or spouses, fish Or human, are most definitely welcome!!

Spoke to the LFS and he's willing to spread the word among his customers about the event & to come out to meet everyone & look to buy. so that is a plus! For those of you who have healthy fish you raise to sell, he would also be a good potential new customer. He's certainly interested and is a very sweet person. I feel, however, that I should stop there until we decide what the verdict is on having it here or ?? Would greatly appreciate further input so we can put something in motion for next month!! No matter where we have a meeting, event/ yard sale, ESPECIALLY if we expand our typical boundaries, we need AS MUCH TIME AS POSSIBLE to make plans, to organize & make arrangements, to allow everyone enough time to request schedule changes with employers, etc. Please give your opinion, your thoughts, no hurt feelings, I promise, if you'd rather not have it out this far! Please, just post your honest thoughts on the subject, whatever they may be!

Since we're losing momentum to make a big May meeting, I'm offering up hosting a casual meeting at the house.  My wife will be traveling to NY the week before Memorial day week so that would be a great time to host it here in case of inclement weather and not intruding on her.  I'll provide the grills/charcoal etc.. but bring anything you'd like to cook out plus that which you'd drink.  I'll validate the date of availability once the wife gets home tonight.  Bill
