So I'm well on my way to beginning to cycle my tank.

Here's the question... I'm used to putting a tad of aquarium salt in my water, but I know salt kills plants.

Should I completely abstain? Use a little? Use recommended dosage? Question

Aquarium salt not needed. No real point for you.

Only use salt in heavily stocked fish only tanks. Don't use any in a planted tank. In a lightly stocked tank with good filtration and plant growth, there's no need for it.

My understanding with the use of aquarium salt is to reduce the harmful effects of nitrite in new or heavily stocked tanks. Also, that it irritates the fish into producing a thicker slime coat and hence increasing their resistance to parasites and infections. Unless you're going for a brackish tank just skip the use of salt.

Veese and Amp nailed it! Aquarium Salt Thumbs10

How this practice got started I've no idea. I know of some shops that dose their tanks regularly to suppress the display of disease in the tanks.

Well I'll just toss that I guess.

Maybe I'll put it on some weeds in my sidewalk.

Thanks!!!

Hang onto it, you can use it in planted tanks if you need it to help with a disease, but dont use it all the time. It is still the best thing for fin rot and a few other things.
