http://www.carespreservation.com/

I keep 2 species of fish that are on the CARES list. I went the extra effort to get them registered (it involved more work than I hoped, but that was mainly due to the fact that I went at it as an individual as opposed to being part of a club with an established CARES relationship). This group is designed to help further the survival of species of fish, some of which are even extinct in the wild. If you see the CARES acronym next to fish listed online by a vendor, give it some extra consideration. Of course you should also do a little research and make sure the line of fish has been vetted as there are quite a few hybrids out there (especially from the Lake Victorian region).

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions. I'm breeding one of the species and just started working with another to see if I can get them to spawn.

IIRC... Some additional facts regarding the program.
Lake Victoria is being depleted of it's wild and pure strains of a unique group of specie due to over-harvest. For both food and export for hobbyist.
Also, it's encouraged that if you do manage to get a line on a pure strain, you keep them in a "specie only tank"... Meaning no other specie in the tank that might hybridize the strain as they will cross-breed.

Question... don't the Fulu's also engage in communal rearing? Bill

No, the Fulus are a typical harem mouthbrooder. Males can be somewhat aggressive and can really change color. I have 5 males in a 75 right now and the subdominant ones sometimes look like females (although the body shape is a little different in my opinion).

By rearing.. I thought that prior broods or aunts and uncles would partake in the subsequent rearing after reaching a safe size for communal living.. .

I don't think I've ever observed that, nor read it. I know Julies and some other Tangs will, so I know the behavior that you are referring to.

With my current wacked out M/F ratio on the Fulus, I'm being very careful with my female. She goes in the 20H and is left alone until she spits the fry. I used to strip my female mbuna back in the day, but these days I just let the females hold until they spit them out.

Here's an article on the species written by Greg Steeves. My stock came from him. He's also the Victorian rep in the CARES program.

Believe it or not, I was "fed" that article by alowishus... What triggered the recall was his incident of losing the brood to a power-outage... Bill
That site is a fountain of information on research.. IF YOU KNOW what your looking for... ie. what lake, what specie etc.

"Interesting Links" close to the top of the home page... not a thread.. a sub-forum?
