teach me ferts :D

Post  kat12 on Sat Dec 14, 2013 3:27 am

Ok, 5 of the 6 tanks are planted - the main has root tabs, the other 3 have nothing but light. I occasionally throw a cap full of excel in a tank now or then.....

SO
55 gallon planted - root tabs in black diamond blasting powder - 48" 108W Aquarium Light Dual Fluorescent T5 HO Strip Hood 6700K
55 gallon baby tank - no substrate - all plants floating or moss - T5 Dual 48" 6500K Aquarium Light Strip 108w
34 hex - black diamond blasting powder - standard 60watt bulb
10 gallon - the regular light that comes with tanks
29 gallon - need to look at what the bulb is, it's a t5.... daylight I think?

If you have decent lighting try dirtying a tank. Plants grow like nuts but tank does get messy a little ; if you keep rescaping it. Otherwise I haven't had any major issues.

For the last year I've experimented with adding dirt into clay pots and haven't noticed any improvement with stem plants(obviously) but have great growth with swords and other heavy root feeding plants.

Well dirting tanks wouldn't work in the 2 bare bottom ones.... and have you noticed my addiction to rescaping the main tank?

That's why I'm using clay pots. I can move them around all I want without releasing too much nutrients into the water column.

Here's a website for low tech set ups and what to dose as far as ferts. This is what I use although it's not needed since my tanks are using dirt, but since you are using sand with root tabs, this is geared more towards your set up. I forgot where I bought my dry ferts, but everything was less than $20 and will last for well over a year with a 20 gallon tank.

Also, to help with keeping the dirt out of your water column. When setting up a tank, after you've placed your dirt, I use a piece of plastic like netting for like crochet from the hobby store. I lay that across the dirt then cap with another inch or 2 of what ever you want to cap with. When you go to move plants, the dirt doesn't stir up nearly as bad if at all. If the roots grow into the netting, a little tug carefully will normally get them loose, if not I just cut them and move the stuff where I want them. No mess.

When I was doing bb tanks and wanted plants, I used lil 2 inch clay pots... a bit of gravel to stop the hole in the bottom, then with cheap potting soil, covered with a bit of window screening, topped with PFS... The Vals were sending shoots out the side hunting for a new home to root! And like Amp said, you could easily move them around at will. I used this setup in my Angel breeding tanks (29G). Bill
