Angels Spawning Empty Angels Spawning

My angels have been spawning all over my HOB intake since I got home today. A large golden pair. I am glad because the female had huddled in the corner for about three days now and was barely eating...I was afraid she was going to pass away. The male is keeping everyone else huddled in the other corner. I wasn't really expecting this and haven't had it happen before. I'm assuming someone will eat them by the time I come home tomorrow???

You might want to give the pair their own tank or remove the other fish from the tank if you want any fries to survive. Another thing you could do is rear the fry yourself. Since its their first time laying eggs the parents are very likely to eat their eggs.

If you don't already have the means to hatch and raise the young fry, I would leave them in the tank and let nature do it's thing. It takes A LOT of tank space to raise Angels. The parents will be protective of the eggs and remove the bad white ones. If any hatch out, it will be probably Saturday sometime. Then they will just wiggle for about another 5 days before they actually swim.....just so you'll know what to look for. Best of luck!!

Just checking on your Angelfish spawn.....How's it going? Did the eggs get eaten?

Hi there,

No, I don't have the means to hatch and raise fry...plus, what on earth would I do with them???

The eggs are fine. I put in a light dose of methalyne blue on the date of my first post. A few have turned white, but not many.

The parents are very protective. The rest of the fish are just hanging out in the other side of the 75 for now. They're all eating, so I'm not too concerned.

Update!!

I came home one day last week and all of the eggs were gone off of the HOB intake. I thought that the eggs were eaten and moved home.

Just got back from a funeral and saw the parents hovering in the same corner. There's a mass of eggs on the top of a broad leaf plant. Could they have moved the eggs? They're wiggling all over the place.

These are adult angels that came with the tank, so I'm assuming they've bred before.

What else should I expect?

After approx. 5 days of wigglers, you will start to see some free-swimmers. The parents will keep trying to herd them back to the wiggler group, or at least keep them close by. I've read that you should not feed the free-swimmers until ALL are swimming.. I don't follow that advice. After another week or so, I find it typical that the folks get fed up with herding the rambunctious school and will start consuming them.
Absent a brine shrimp hatchery, I've used First Bites (petxxxx) and decapped brine shrim as their first food. Bill

Thanks Bill. Does that mean if any of these guys make it that you're willing to take them in?

I broke down and bought a little 20 gal tank. I ultimately want to use it for feeder guppies, but in the meantime may move any hatchlings to it.

I'd like to move the wrigglers and the parents now, but doubt that's a good idea.

I think the parents are having anxiety. They constantly move all of the little guys to place to place to place.

Sweet.

Both of the parents are the same golden color with rust and gold color top fins. The mom is pretty square and the dad has super long fins. They're so long he swims laterally when chasing everybody back to their current corner.

I added water from the 75 they're in to the 20 I set up today. I'm hoping that it will be safe for them in 5 or so days. If I move them and they all die I am not going to be a happy camper.

Even with my rough start, I've only had 5 neons die this whole time...please note, this does not include fish that my leaf fish eat (they are getting huge btw)

COCO...live micro worms are a really good first food for anyone that doesn't want to hatch out the BBS. You just have to put them in oatmeal and a sprinkle of dry yeast and keep them at room temp. I can send you a starter culture by mail.

Crying or Very sad

Sad news. After taking some of the water out of the 75 to try to help start the 20 and adding back treated water, it seems this morning that all of the wrigglers died.

I saw about 5 that were still sort of moving but I doubt that any of them will be alive when I get home today.

I think I count 8 wrigglers left.

It smells like I really need to change the water, but I'm sort of afraid to at this point. I'll just open the window until either they can be moved to the 20g or they pass.

Activated carbon will take care of the smell. If the tank smells, then there's something wrong and a water change may only help but not fix the problem. Get your water tested soon and try to figure out what went wrong. Possible causes are dead fish, overfeeding, or not enough filtration to handle the bioload. If your fish die after a water change, then make sure you test your tap water right before you do a water change. Could be that the tap has high levels of ammonia or you're not using the right stuff to treat the chlorine and chloramine. Richmond adds ammonia to the tap water to make chloramine and chloramine requires more water conditioner to neutralize compared to chorine. I suggest always using Prime and using a double strength dose to be on the safe side.

I tested the water parameters and it looks ok. My 75 doesn't have a lid on it so I think some of the "smell" is just rapid evaporation. I'll look into adding some carbon.

That being said, I'm pretty sure I buried a pleco when I added the substrate to that tank, so he's probably adding to my ammonia. I did about a 25% on that one and a 50% on the 55 gal just now.

I added 1/2 dose flourish excel to the 55 gal for the first time so we'll see how that goes, and I added 1/2 dose seachem stress guard to both tanks as well.
