Lets do a local collection trip

Post  Amp2020 on Tue Mar 12, 2013 1:37 pm

I'm wanting to setup a local biotope and need help finding good collection sites. It seems more access points are restricted and privately owned. So if you know of a good fishing hole that is open to the public where native non-game fish can be legaly collected let me know. Looking for small fish suitable for a 75 gallon tank and native aquatic plants. The weather is getting warmer soon and I'm sure a few other local members would like to join. If so, let me know and I'll notify you when I go and let you borrow my equipment if you need it. I have a cast net, two person sein net, fishing gear for small fish, and hoping to find or diy a heavy duty dip net. Could also use a minnow trap if someone is willing to lend theirs out for a day. Once I find a good collection spot I'll try to contact the local game and wildlife to check the local regulations to ensure everything is legit. But the first step is finding a good spot with diversity and access. So please make suggestions. Best places are going to be small streams and ponds that have not been stocked with game fish. Looking for native species only.

IMHO, the definitive expert in this regard would be Ira. He's done local collection trips in the past, has suggested the same thing and is full of options.
I'll be there with bells on my toes but won't be in a position to host the samples.

Back in Missouri I was fortunate enough to live near five springs and many rivers full of fish and wildlife. I use to take a 10 gallon tank, and fill it up with water on the back of my truck. Then take my camera and photograph anything I caught. Then I usually returned them back to the water when I was done. But every once in a while I'd catch something amazing and just had to keep it in my tank. My favorite were the darters, and killifish. Even kept a few damselfly larva till they started flying around the house. They were easy to catch on a finger and let loose out the door or window. There's a lot of water bugs that make fascinating specimens for a small one gallon tank with little maintenance required in a properly setup tank. Great for class room projects and for little ones to keep.

I'd have to first find a biotope that I want to emulate at home and then acquire the plants and livestock. So the fist trip will most likely be a sampling trip and not so much a collection trip for me. Unless something really catches my eye. http://www.worldwide

The smiley icons are really messed up. That last one was suppose to be the one with a camera and not the crying one.

Here in FL I have found small ditches to be the best place to catch the smaller natives. You get into larger water and you end up with a bunch of fry of larger fish. Not sure what holds true up in yalls neck of the woods.....

Fern. I've driven through Florida to Tampa Bay once and was so temped to pull over many times. There was so many drainage ditches on the sides of the road just calling my name. Up here its very hilly and most of the ditches dry out at some point through out the year. So the only options are streams and lakes. Most of the small ponds I've seen are man made and only stocked with game fish. Some small fish can find their way into these bodies of water by hitching a ride on a duck or other waterfowl but the variety is very limited in those bodies of water. I usually look for areas where the water is shallow and heavily planted. Coves and shallow banks usually work best for me. I do stay away from muddy areas. I've been stuck in mud before up to my knees and that's a scary feeling. Lost both shoes and took a few minutes to get free. Was just like quick sand and I was the only person there for miles. Won't do that again.

Laughing I know all about stuck in the mud! I've gotten stuck in the mud flats on the CaloosaHatchee way out before, many pairs of shoes are out there lol. And that's waist deep in a river knee deep in the mud at low tide......

I'm trying to get permission for a wet-lands that feeds Swift Creek res. I've seen it flowing like a small river at times but usually has spring fed movement throughout the summer. Should hear something by the end of the weekend. It's pretty rural, off of Otterdale rd.

At the meet this Wednesday, one of the topics to be discussed are plans for a club collection trip. I'll post on here any details that get decided on for those who are unable to attend.

I didn't make it to the last meeting so I don't know if there were any plans made.

If anyone wants to go on a Saturday or Sunday, I'm in. How about we try and make plans for May 4th or 5th? Does anyone know of a good place near Richmond?

Here's an excellent resource for freshwater species in virginia. I think I posted this back on the old forums too. http://web1.cnre.vt.edu/efish/

Also there is a book you can buy called Fishes of Virginia, but it runs about 100 bucks.

Does anyone want to volunteer as a local guide for the following weekend? I'll be searching for some fishing spots but don't know where yet. Any suggestions in the Richmond area?
